Originally from Colombia, Fabio has been in fitness for the last 25 years (nearly 26 years this November). It all began at the age of 17 when he started training in his own home gym – not because of looks but because he was keen to become stronger, both mentally and physically. This inner discovery developed the self-confidence that allowed him to embrace new challenges.
The next year, he completed military service where he had the opportunity to experience things he had never imagined – such as jumping from bridges, rocks and helicopters into water, repelling in the dark, and learning about survival. This continued to develop mental toughness and self-belief.
While completing an Honours in Psychology at university, he was still nurturing his passion for the outdoors, including rock climbing at a high level (US Level 5.12), bouldering (V7) and also training for Eco Challenge adventure races. By the time he was working as a Psychologist in a mental facility, he realised that he wanted to focus full time on sport and fitness as a profession, because that was already his lifestyle.
After a period of travelling the world, he finally settled in Australia, which gave him the opportunity to focus on another passion – food and nutrition. During the first three years of the cooking apprenticeship, he obtained the knowledge he was seeking – how to prepare and cook food properly, using the right methods and standards.
Fabio discovered CrossFit in December 2006, which complemented his training and lifestyle because it made a lot of sense and summarised what he had done in the past. Fabio incorporated this into his profession, opening and operating a successful CrossFit studio in inner-Melbourne. This involved completing further professional development, including seminars with CrossFit HQ, and professional Olympic lifting courses with the Australian Weightlifting Federation. It was during this time that he came to understand that various methodologies are equally successful for different people and their individualised goals – there is not one perfect way for all clients. From here, he changed the business operations from CrossFit to personalised coaching.
Coaching became a really important part of Fabios life. It solidified the foundations that were already there by furthering his knowledge of the human psyche learned at university to apply it within a health and fitness setting. It allows him to provide a holistic approach for clients that includes all of the areas he has studied – psychology, nutrition and fitness.
